BatChat With Matt & Will: Three Monks Walk Into a Batman Story

The Monk Banner

One of the earliest foes that Batman ever faced was the vampire known as The Monk who, at the end of his first storyline, Batman killed. With a gun. It was the Golden Age. But death has never kept a comic book character down, and with alternate Earths and reboot, The Monk has returned in very different forms multiple times. Patreon backer Tim Rooney asked us to cover the Bronze Age Monk story, and so we tossed in the original Monk story and another Monk appearance to make this vampirific episode.

  • Batman Vs. the Vampire (Detective Comics V.1 #31-32)
  • Nightmare In Crimson (Batman V.1 #349-351, Detective Comics V.1 #517)
  • Batman Vs. The Mad Monk #1-6

Be sure to check out this week’s BatChat column, where we look at Detective Comics #1,067, Riddler: Year One #2 and Batman: The Audio Adventures #4.

Matt Lazorwitz read his first comic at the age of five. It was Who's Who in the DC Universe #2, featuring characters whose names begin with B, which explains so much about his Batman obsession. He writes about comics he loves, and co-hosts the creator interview podcast WMQ&A with Dan Grote.

Will Nevin loves bourbon and AP style and gets paid to teach one of those things. He is on Twitter far too often.
