BatChat With Matt & Will: A True Gentleman’s Gentleman

Alfred Pennyworth Banner

He has been many things to Batman over their time together. Butler. Healer. Confessor. But above all else? Father. Alfred Pennyworth has been a part of the Batman legend since the 1940s, but with the advent of Crisis on Infinite Earths, and the change making Alfred a part of Bruce’s life from his earliest memory, Alfred has become an indispensable ally to Batman. This week, as we get near Father’s Day, we spend time reading three stories about Batman’s father figure.

  • Captive Audience (Batman: Gotham Adventures #16)
  • Oblation (Batman: Gotham Knights #7)
  • Father’s Day (Batman Vol. 3 Annual #3)

Be sure to check out this week’s BatChat column where we look at Batman #136, Joker: The Man Who Stopped Laughing #9 and Peacemaker Tries Hard #2.

Matt Lazorwitz read his first comic at the age of five. It was Who's Who in the DC Universe #2, featuring characters whose names begin with B, which explains so much about his Batman obsession. He writes about comics he loves, and co-hosts the creator interview podcast WMQ&A with Dan Grote.

Will Nevin loves bourbon and AP style and gets paid to teach one of those things. He is on Twitter far too often.
